The Serbian superstar, Novak Djokovic, has defeated Andreas Sappi of Italy in the second round of the Western and Southern Open at Cincinnati. Djokovic won the match with ease. It took him just 90 minutes to thrash Sappi in the straight sets by 7-6(4), 6-2. Djokovic looked a bit rusty at the start of the match and he was not hitting the ball that well in the first few games. But, as the match progressed, he settled into his groove and played some delightful forehand shots. With this victory, Djokovic has made his way to the third round where he will play against Nikolay Davydenko of Russia.
In the first set, Djokovic was given a very tough fight by Sappi. The Italian player didn’t allow Djokovic to get even a single breakthrough in the first set. At the end of the 12th game, the scores were tied at 6-6 and the set went into the tie breaker. Djokovic made a very good start to the tie breaker and won the first two points. He maintained that lead till the end of the tie breaker and won the first set by 7-6. In the second set, Djokovic looked a different layer altogether. Both the players held their service in the first two games of the second set and the scores were levelled at 1-1 at the end of the second game. Djokovic broke Sappi’s service in the 3rd and the 5th game and won the next 4 games in a row to make the score 5-1. The Italian player held his service in the 7th game, but, that was too little, too late. Djokovic served out the next game to wrap up the match.
Djokovic didn’t serve any double fault and smashed 3 aces in the match. Djokovic had got a bye in the first round, so, this was his first match of the competition. In the post match interview, the Serbian player said that he has arrived here pretty late and didn’t have much practice before the match. So, it took him some time to get adapted to the conditions here. Hopefully, he would perform better in the further matches.

Novak Djokovic has defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the quarter final of Men’s tennis singles tournament of London Olympics. Djokovic won the match in the straight sets by 6-1, 7-5. Djokovic, who has been given the second seed in this competition, has secured a place in the final four with this victory. He took just 1 hour and 20 minutes to knock Tsonga out of the competition.
Djokovic played with a lot of aggression right from the start of the match. He got a breakthrough in the second game of the first set to take a 2-0 lead. He held his service in the next game to make the score 3-0. Djokovic again got a breakthrough in the sixth game and won the first set easily by 6-1. However, in the second set, the Serbian superstar didn’t start that well. He lost the first three games and was trailed by 0-3. But, Djokovic showed his class after that and lifted his game. He broke the service of Tsonga in the 11th game and finally, won the set by 7-5.
After the match, Djokovic told the reporters that he is very happy with his performance today. As per Djokovic, Tsonga was playing brilliantly from the baseline, so, it was very important to serve well against him. He said that the conditions were not easy and it was pretty windy out there. Djokovic will play against the local superstar Andy Murray in the semifinal. Murray is in fine form and he thrashed Nicolas Almagro of Spain in the straight sets by 6-4, 6-1 in the quarter final. On being asked about that match, Djokovic said that it would be quite tough to play against Murray infront of his home crowd. He would have to be at his best to beat Murray in the semifinal.
Janko Tipsarevic has defeated Marcel Granollers of Spain in the quarter final of the Rogers Cup. With this victory, the Serbian player has secured a berth in the final 4. The match was pretty much one sided and the Spaniard didn’t manage to break Tipsarevic’s service even once in the whole match. Tipsarevic won the match in the straight sets by 6-4, 6-4.
Tipsarevic, who has been given fifth seed in the competition, was playing his second match of the day. Earlier in the day, he had defeated Marin Cilic of Germany in the third round. Winning two matches on the same day is not an easy task and the ease, with which Tipsarevic did it, shows that he is in tremendous form at the moment. Read more »
